How to prepare for auditions

Acting:  Prepare a 30-60 second monologue that shows off your acting skills. You can use one of the monologues linked below, or choose one of your own. We may ask you to perform your monologue again, so be ready! If we do ask you to perform your monologue again, it is NOT because you performed badly, it is because we want to see how you take direction. This monologue should be memorized. If you aren’t performing a monologue from the packet, bring a copy of your monologue to the audition so we can cue you if need be.

Singing:  Prepare a 30-60 second piece of a song to show off your vocal skills (again, preferably memorized). The audition will be a cappella (meaning without instruments), but there will be a piano in the room so you can play the correct note for yourself before you begin. There is a wide variety of songs in the show, so you can audition with any type of song you feel suits your vocal range the best. We urge you to choose something that you love to sing! After you sing, we might ask you to do a range test in which we will see how high and low you can sing.

Dancing:  Dance auditions are about 45 mins long. You do not have to prepare anything. We will begin with a short warm-up, but we encourage you to warm up some on your own ahead of time, as well. Please wear appropriate dance attire (leggings, loose top, jazz shoes) to your audition as well as water. You can decide if you want to be in one, two or all three dances, but during the dance audition, everyone will be learning a piece from each dance so the dance director can see the ability of each dancer.

Band:
Please prepare a piece of music of your choice (any genre and of any length; we will cut you off during the audition). In addition, if you can read sheet music, please prepare the excerpt for your instrument which can be printed from the links below (if there are two provided, choose just one to bring to us). If you cannot find an excerpt for your instrument (i.e. classical percussion, low solo voice instruments, etc.) don’t worry! Just bring your piece of choice! Remember to bring your own instrument (this means drumsticks for drummers and cables for guitarists), or to notify us if you need one provided and we’ll see what we can do. A drum set, guitar + bass amp, and piano will be in the audition room.

Callbacks:  Not everyone will be called back, but don’t worry, because everyone who auditions for Freshman Cabaret gets in! In acting callbacks, you will be given the script and instructed to do a “cold reading” or act the scene on the spot. For singing callbacks, singers will learn a few bars of a song, which they will then sing for the directors. For dancing callbacks, dancers will learn a small section of the two featured dances that will be in the show. These callbacks are just so we get a sense of which performers work best with each other or may be best suited to a particular role or section of the piece; you will get cast even if you don’t get the role or part that we call you back for specifically.
